A Foundation Worthy of Holmes on Homes

a foundation worthy of Holmes on homes

I am intending fot this to be a record of the things that happen at my new job, front desk/receptionist/switchboard/reservation agent at a 71 room resort in Ontario.

The resort I'm working at has 71 rooms which are divided into 5 types as well as 14 bunch of cottages. There are probably 5 different configurations of rooms in each type. So, for example, a "basic" room can have either 2 double beds, 2 queen beds, a queen bed and bunk beds; a "super basic" can have 2 levels or a seperate sleeping room with a sofa bed or etc etc. The types are not confined to any one building, there are "basics" in 4 of the 6 buildings that have rooms in them.
The point is that if someone calls to book "a room" we have to pull out this booklet that describes every single room and what's in it and then try and figure out which one to put them in.
This is opposite to how things usually work in a hotel where you just ask for " 2 double beds" and when you check in they put you in a room, we reserve people a specific room because chances are that SPECIFIC room is the only one of that type.
Some of the rooms are really nice. Some of them need a major update. Some of them are 400$ a night and I'm constantly amazed that people actually pay it.

When I started the job on May 8th they were in the middle of going through the data base. The data base is 7 years old. The propery management system they use is 3 years old (epic, for anyone in the know). They're going through and cutting and pasting names from the data base into epic and if they don't show up they get deleted from the data base because they havn't stayed at the resort in the last 3 years. Basically it's a huge pain in the assmar. And it was my job for the first 3 days. Couldn't even answer the phones because I didn't know how to deal with transfering calls or taking reservations. This resulted in Tracy, my manager, taking frantic bathroom breaks so as to not miss a call even though I was sitting at a desk looking at the phone as it rang. Tracy is nice enough but a numbers person, not big on small talk, big on business (and in size, but that's neither here nor there). Once Lucy (the other rooms division manager) started working she basically said "well, this sucks, here's a master key, go see some rooms" and taught me to take reservations and transfer calls and stuff. Sadly, she's due to give birth in august and is leaving for her maternity leave in about 3 weeks.

The resort is run/owned by a management company which has a shell company that runs this specific resort. Lucy used to be married to the owner's son who is now, for reasons I have yet to suss out, banned from Canada.

The other people in the office are:
Betsy: The onsite events co-ordinator. One of those people who is my age but seems so much older. Really nice. Tons of food allergies. Works super hard with crazy bridezilla types every weekend, sometimes in groups of more than one per weekend.

Joanne: The sales admin assistant and occasional front desk person. Does all the paper work that Lonnie doesn't want to do (read:all of it)

Lonnie: Sales manager. Power suited power woman who farms out the sales contracts to either Betsy or Joanne. Works 8-4 Mon to Fri unless she has something better to do. Made a woman organizing a retirement weekend cry, hand to God.

Nancy: Has basically the same job as me but occasionally does events stuff with Betsy as she did her college placement with her in late April. Has about 4 weeks more job experience than me. Really nice. Working for Disney come September.

Catlin: A new arrival, has 5 or so summers experience in my job and a few others. Just getting back into the swing of things. Addicted to the World Cup. I hope she's ok with me indirectly insulting her Iranian boyfriend (didn't know he was Iranian, I swear)by being glad they lost to Mexico in the hopes that it would teach their government to focus on human rights before sports. Oops. She's jelous of my England track jacket. Not sure if we're "friends" or not but we get along fine, nationalistic feuds notwithstanding.

Wow, thats alot of text. I think I'm going to work on some formating now, more to come soon.
